Are You Inviting?

Recently, I was in Nashville for the annual UNITE event, sponsored by CBA: The Association for Christian Retail, from which conversations have been heard on The Meeting House; there is audio and video material available through MeetingHouseOnline.info.  One guest was Don Piper, author of the best-selling book, 90 Minutes in Heaven, who talked about his forthcoming book, People I Met at the Gates of Heaven: Who’s Going to Be There Because of You?  If you’re familiar with Don’s story, he is someone who was declared to be dead, yet returned from the dead with a story of having traveled to heaven.  In this latest book, he relates that he saw people who had an impact on his life and challenges Christians to impact the lives of others and share what it takes to get to heaven.

Not Idly By

A pastor in Washington state concluded his Father’s Day sermon recently by praying this: “Lord...don’t let us be content as men to just let life go by, to see the world around us burn. God, instead, help us to get involved.”

His Will

The last will and testament of the late evangelist Billy Graham was recently released to the public, and it contains some wise words that not only apply to his family members, but can provide challenges for each of us.

Soaring

You go into the experience of an airplane flight with the expectation that you will routinely get to your destination, more or less on time, with only a minimum of inconvenience - maybe some turbulence, perhaps a snafu with the baggage.  But, the passengers on a recent flight from New York to Dallas had another thing coming.

The ChurchLeaders.com website tells the story of what happened to the 149 passengers on that plane that day: “An explosion in the left engine of the plane sent a piece of shrapnel through one of the windows of the plane. A woman was partially sucked out the window but other passengers managed to pull her body back into the plane and a registered nurse administered CPR until the plane landed.”

Swatting at the Bee

For some, it might be required reading; for others, it may be an acquired taste. The Babylon Bee is a Christian satire site that will frequently give you something to think about, maybe chuckle at, or even laugh out loud!

All Lives Should Shine

A few years ago, Joni Eareckson Tada shared a radio commentary which encouraged listeners to allow the light of Christ to shine even through hardships.  She included a reference to a passage in Philippians 2.  She writes:

The apostle Paul is writing from a dark

prison cell and he tells his friends: “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe...”

For years, the Gerber company has been displaying the famous baby picture on its products. And, now, each year, the company, according to Bill Partyka, chief executive and president of Gerber, “...we choose the baby who best exemplifies Gerber’s long-standing heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby...”

That quote is from a Townhall.com story about the latest Gerber Spokesbaby, Lucas Warren, who was selected from 140,000 entrants.  Lucas is very unique - he has Down Syndrome.

Standing Alone

Standing alone has the potential to get attention and enact lasting change. On The Meeting House on Faith Radio recently, I interviewed Joyce Im Bartholomew, who is a singer who has recorded a pro-life song; the video of that song was banned from YouTube, and so she took legal action against the Internet behemoth. Even though she initially lost her challenge, others who had experienced restrictions came forward, as well. Ultimately her video was allowed to be posted.

The Importance of Lineage

During my Advent series, 25: A Christ-mas Adventure,we walked through Scriptures that focused on reasons why we can worship Jesus.  One area concentrated on some of the prophecies written about the coming of Jesus.  The Bible says that He would be born of virgin, in the city of Bethlehem, from the tribe of Judah.

We get a clear picture of the lineage of Jesus from the Old Testament. It has been said that Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies written about Him. We can have certainty that He is our Messiah and, as Scripture foretold his first coming, so we can trust the Bible’s reliability on His second.

Advent-ure 2017: Let's Worship Jesus

For the last few years, I have composed a series for Advent that I have entitled: 25: A Christmas Advent-ure.  This year, I want to focus on the importance of allowing the component of worship to enhance your celebration of Christmas.  I have listed 25 different Scripture verses in four overall categories: Prophecy, Personality, Promises, and Performance.
