The Superiority of the Gospel

Written by Bob Crittendon

The apostle Paul wrote in the first chapter of Romans that he was not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.  So often, I think we look at the gospel as simply the message that Christ came to save sinners, and that by accepting Him, we become saved and we get to go to heaven.

Are We a Christian Nation?

Written by Bob Crittendon

A recent survey provides some material for consideration about our nation’s history and our current condition. A select group participated in the June 2012 Evangelical Leaders Survey, commissioned by the National Association of Evangelicals. Some 68 percent of those surveyed agreed that America is not a Christian nation, while 32 said it is. Of the 32 percent who said the United States is a Christian nation, most indicated that they did so because the U.S. was founded with Christian principles or because there are more Christians in the nation than followers of any other religion.

God is Speaking…Are You Listening?

Written by Bob Crittendon

It is truly amazing – there is a cacophony of communication in the culture around us. Various types of media compete for our attention, and voices from an assortment of worldviews present inferior alternatives to God’s truth. The multiplicity can be distracting and overwhelming, but I am confident that our Lord has numerous ways to communicate His truth to us personally and to the people with whom we come in contact.

Celebrating American Independence

Imagine this – a nation founded on the principles of the Bible, where God’s heart is expressed in the laws and conduct of the people. What an amazing system of government and an atmosphere of goodness that could be! Now, consider these words:

Chasing After the Afterlife

Written by Bob Crittendon

We can be so consumed with our lives here and now that we don’t pause very often to think about what happens after we leave this earth. I believe that if we develop a greater awareness of heaven, it can impact the way we live our lives now.

Tracing the Hand of God

Written by Bob Crittendon

Quite often in this space, I highlight aspects of the culture, not always positive, of which we need to be aware and offer ideas on how we can be responsive and influential regarding cultural trends. For this month’s column, I want to celebrate FIVE areas where I am observing that God is working in a profound way through his people.

On Whom Do We Depend?

Written by Bob Crittendon

The recent flap over the mandate by the Department of Health and Human Services requiring religious organizations, through their insurance companies, to provide free birth control (including types of contraception that can induce abortions) has brought to light an agenda that stands in contrast to the Judeo-Christian principles upon which America was founded and has long embraced. We have to recognize that our nation’s emphasis on dependence on God is being reduced, resulting in the rise of a sense of dependence on human wisdom, ingenuity, and control, embodied in a large, centralized government intent on managing the everyday lives of the citizenry. Please consider these points:

Candidate Checklist

Written by Bob Crittendon

Very soon after the publication of this column, voters in Alabama will be going to the polls to cast their ballots in the Presidential primaries. Democrat voters will be affirming their selection of Barack Obama for a second term, and Republican voters will be making choices that will be somewhat significant in affecting the delegate count for the convention. I believe that Christians have a responsibility, as good citizens of our constitutional republic, to participate in the political process.

Becoming a Cultural Conscience

Written by Bob Crittendon

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1st John 1:5-7, NAS)
