Ill Pray For You

Written by Bob Crittendon

Four simple words.  Powerful.  A promise.

I’ll.

Pray.

For.

You.

A piece in Converge magazine starts out by saying:

“I’ll pray for you.”

Private Practice. Public Faith.

Written by Bob Crittendon

There is a direct relationship between the outward expression of our walk with Jesus and the private time we spend with Him.  I came across the findings of a LifeWay Research survey from the fall of 2012 which indicates we as believers could do better on our personal, private encounters with Christ as we engage His Word.

Praise Can Set You Free

Written by Bob Crittendon

Can our praises set us free?  Undoubtedly...look at the story of Paul and Silas in Acts 16, as they sang in the midnight hour - in prison.  We’re told that they were praying and singing hymns, when there was a great earthquake and the prison doors were opened.   The keeper of the prison was distraught, but Paul assured him no one had left.  The man then asked Paul and Silas what he must do to be saved.   They told him to believe on Jesus and he, along with his household, would be saved.

Living as a Boundary Pioneer

Written by Bob Crittendon

There has been debate about the compatibility of faith and science. If anyone perceives that there are relatively few Christian believers working in the scientific fields, then a new survey conducted by sociologist Elaine Howard Ecklund and her colleagues at Rice University and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) might call for a rethinking of that position.  Christianity Today reported on the results of the survey of more than 10,000 people, including 574 self-identified as scientists, who responded to a 75-question survey. Among the scientists, 17 percent said the term “evangelical” describes them “somewhat” or “very well,” compared to 23 percent of all respondents.

Shining Like Stars in a Dark World

Written by Bob Crittendon

In Philippians 2:15, the apostle Paul cautions believers in Christ to live in a manner that reflects His nature, encouraging us to become “blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” (NKJV)

Faith on the Silver Screen

Written by Bob Crittendon

A recent article by Andrew Romano of The Daily Beast, “Hollywood Declares 2014 the Year of the Bible,” posed a pop quiz:

How many of the top 15 highest-U.S.-grossing movies of all time - adjusted for inflation - star comic-book characters?

Answer: Zero.

And how many are based on the Bible?

Answer: Two.

The results are in and the 2013 Word of the Year, according to the dictionary people at Merriam-Webster, is “science” (“cognitive” was second), according to a CNN story, which reports that over at the Oxford American Dictionaries US, the top word is “selfie”, the result of the word’s growing usage and digital fame.  Its U.S. counterpart picked “science” primarily based on numbers on its website.  Merriam-Webster reportedly looked at the most searched-for words on its online dictionary, as well as those that showed the biggest increase in the number of look-ups.

The Lost Are Found

Written by Bob Crittendon

A few weeks ago, a significant number of Christians were focused on an unusual set of circumstances involving renowned Bible teacher and Experiencing God author Dr. Henry Blackaby.  On a particular Thursday afternoon, he was on his way to pick up his wife, Marilynn, from an appointment, and was reported to be missing – for 29 hours.  Indications are that at some point he had suffered a heart attack while driving.  He apparently became confused, lost his sense of direction, and attempted unsuccessfully to find his way home.  He ultimately was pulled over by police near Tifton, Georgia, about 150 miles south of Atlanta.

Make It Right

Written by Bob Crittendon

The words of Micah 6:8 give us a template for living our lives with justice, motivated by mercy - and can shape an attitude of wanting to make things right:

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”
