Prayer...A Powerful Weapon

Written by Bob Crittendon

In Ephesians 6: 10-12, we can read this exhortation: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (NKJV)

What Are Your "Essentials"?

Written by Bob Crittendon

The image is clear from John chapter 15...Jesus said in verse 5: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (NKJV)

A Perilous Path

Written by Bob Crittendon

The Bible warns us against empty pursuits - the thirst to have more money, to gain more material resources, and perhaps to “hit the jackpot” in life.

Proverbs 13:7 offers: “There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; And one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches.” (NKJV).  In Proverbs 13:11 (NKJV), the Bible says: “Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, But he who gathers by labor will increase.”

Righteousness Exalts a Nation

Written by Bob Crittendon

God wants us to be wise in Him, and to live according to His principles. That can enhance our individual lives and contribute to a more righteous society, if significant numbers of believers take that to heart.  Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.” (NKJV)

Hungry?

Written by Bob Crittenden

This is the beginning of a new year, and by the time you have acquired a copy of this magazine and come across this column, you may have already made and broken your New Year’s resolutions.  I certainly hope not, but a Forbes story from 2013 indicated that some 40% of Americans make such resolutions, but only 8% keep them, according to research from the University of Scranton cited in the article.

The Gospel According to BuzzFeed

Written by Bob Crittenden

The website, BuzzFeed.com posted a video attempting to provide a unique, albeit unbiblical, view of what Christianity is and what Christians believe. First - a little background on BuzzFeed: According to a Business Insider piece, BuzzFeed posted to their website in 2010 that, “We have a big audacious goal of helping creative people launch and spread their ideas across the web. We have been thinking for years about how media spreads on the web, and our technology provides a unique way to launch, track, and accelerate viral content.”

Found Out

Written by Bob Crittendon

It’s unnerving to think that personal data could end up in the wrong hands.  We have perhaps experienced credit card information that has been compromised, and are learning that skilled hackers can gather data and perhaps use it against others.

This brings us to the situation involving the cheating-facilitation site Ashley Madison.  First of all, you recognize that these data miners are stealing, so they can take no moral high ground.

Truths for a Lasting Marriage

Written by Bob Crittendon

Recently, my wife, Beth, and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary, and coinciding with it, we opened up a box from our storage room full of wedding memorabilia - including the guest books from our wedding, the program, and even the script for the ceremony.  It was a fun journey to relive some of those moments, and one that I would highly recommend for married couples.  We also celebrated by pulling out our wedding video (that’s right, on VHS).

Looking back at milestones in our lives can help reinforce some of those glorious moments on life’s journey, especially when you consider some of those spiritual moments.  We devoted our marriage ceremony to be a time of worship and celebration.  One of the ministers performing our ceremony encouraged those in attendance, as we spoke words of affirmation to one another, to take some time to affirm their spouse along with us.

Upholding Marriage

Written by Bob Crittendon

Just days after the U.S. Supreme Court attempted to create a new category of so-called “rights” in the U.S. Constitution and in advance of Independence Day, a study, conducted by the Newseum Institute’s First Amendment Center in partnership with USA Today, found that that one-third of Americans can’t name any of the rights that the First Amendment guarantees.  According to a USA Today story, less than two-thirds of survey respondents – 57% vs. 68% a year ago -- were able to cite freedom of speech as one protected by the amendment. Only 19% were able to cite the freedom of religion, down from 29%.

Not Called to the Middle

Written by Bob Crittendon

Pew Research has released a massive new study on religious affiliation that has been opening eyes since its release in May. The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey included some 35,000 respondents.
