A Hunger for Peace

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

As I write this article, teens across the nation are excitedly anticipating the release of The Hunger Games, a popular “young adult” book series and now motion picture. The story is based upon an oppressed futuristic society controlled by a dictatorial government through hunger and an annual “Reaping”. Bob Hoose (March 16, Plugged In, Focus on the Family) describes the plot:

Changed lives. That’s what couples leave with after attending the FamilyLife Weekend to Remember. Lives changed dramatically for the better.

Paul and Carol Sanford are an Air Force couple living in Montgomery while Paul attends Air University. They’ve been married 20 years, or as they point out, 245 months. Since they were married on the 3rd of the month, the Sanford’s are in the habit of celebrating their anniversary on the 3rd day of each month—with a date! Paul and Carol plan to further fortify their marriage by attending the “Weekend to Remember” marriage conference at Embassy Suites, February 10-12. They recently shared with Bob Crittenden of Faith Radio, “We know that our marriage is strengthened because the Lord is the center of our relationship. The (marriage) conference will allow us to grow together in our faith and dedication to the Lord and each other. Plus, it’s fun to have a weekend away!”

Finishing Strong

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man’s life is but a breath. (Psalm 39:4, 5)

Getting Christmas Right

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

As parents, Mike and I have had the unique opportunity of experiencing parenthood in two different seasons of life. Ashley and Ali were born two years apart while we were in our 20s. Aimee, on the other hand, shocked us all by arriving smack-dab in the middle of our mid-life crisis. Her sisters were well-entrenched in adolescence, while Mike and I were in our forties, starting our second career in family ministry. During my pregnancy, I endured such comments like, “Better you than me!” or “Have you lost your mind?” At the doctor’s office, I remember anxiously scanning the other expectant mothers, hoping to find a compatriot near my age, and then grimacing when I saw my chart stamped “high risk—advanced maternal age”. Throughout 40 weeks of pregnancy (imagine September until late May), I had plenty of time to ask God, “What in the world are you doing???”

Words of Wisdom and Thanksgiving

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

Each year in late October, the same thing happens—another birthday rolls around. And when I think about the alternative—not having another birthday— it becomes a day worth celebrating, even though the candles practically set the house on fire! This year, I found myself studying other people’s lists—lists of life’s lessons, lists of excellent character qualities, and lists of things we said we’d never do, but have managed to do anyway.

My Spiritual Journey as a Seeker

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

Mike and Lisa Conn teach a class on Sunday mornings at Frazer UMC called “Family Teams for Christ” (FTC). A 9-month course, FTC is attended by military and civilian couples who desire to strengthen their marriage and family using God’s blueprints. The first block of instruction is “Our Spiritual Journey” which helps identify one’s spiritual path as well as build a spiritual foundation for marriage.

The year was 1980. Mike and I had been dating over a year. And I was mad. I was very mad. I was more than mad—I was scared. I was scared because I was on the verge of losing my heart, and I knew it.

Sharing the Love of Christ in Haiti

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

Go and make disciples of all
nations…. Matthew 28:19

For years, we’ve promised our daughter, Aimee, that when she was 12 years old we would take her on our annual Family Teams for Christ (FTC) overseas mission trip. This summer was her debut, along with Morgan, a 13 year old on her first mission trip with her parents, John and Mitzi Fleming, of Montgomery. The six of us met our group leader, Margaret, from 410 Bridge, an Atlanta-based non-profit group serving in Haiti. We also purposefully take couples on mission trips so that husbands and wives can share the life-changing experience together, and were excited when Chandler, Margaret’s husband of 30 years, joined his wife and our team!
