Standing Firm in His Peace

Written by Lisa & Mike Conn

As a couple, what are you doing to strengthen your marriage and family?

Stand firm then . . . . with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

(Ephesians 6:14, 15)

How is Your Breastplate of Righteousness?

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  Ephesians 6:14, 15

Ephesians 6 is a well known chapter of the New Testament that teaches Christians to put on the full armor of God so that we can withstand the attacks of evil that come against us.  Here we will examine the breastplate of righteousness, beginning with the meaning of the term, “righteousness”.  Secondly, we will look at how we become “righteous”.  And finally, we will look at the literal armor that soldiers wear, in particular, the breastplate.

Wearing the Belt of Truth in Marriage

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.  Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist . . .  Ephesians 6:13, 14

Continuing our discussion of The Armor of God in Ephesians 6, we will focus on the belt of truth, the first symbol of protection to be mentioned.  We will examine the truth of God’s word and the importance of being truthful, particularly within the marriage relationship.

Stand Your Ground

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

(Ephesians 6:13)

All military commanders and planners spend a lot of time determining what “ground” they will defend.  In war, we stake the American flag and will defend that ground with our lives.  In marriage, whether military or civilian, Mike and I tend to view each couple as having either a red flag, yellow flag, or a green flag staked on their marriage ground.  What color is the flag staked in your ground?

Stand Firm in Love

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

We teach 12-17 workshops every five weeks for Squadron Officer School students and their spouses which focus on building relationships and gaining tools to keep their marriages and families strong as they face and overcome the unique challenges of military life.  Three key areas of instruction are:  (1) Putting on the Armor of God, (2) Keeping love tanks full, and (3) building “got your back” Christian relationships.

Cuba: Friend or Foe?…an answer (part 2)

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

About six years ago, an Air Force officer and his wife, who were members of our “Family Teams for Christ” Sunday school class, approached Mike with the idea of having a class coin, much like the military tradition of having a unit coin for each squadron member.  He suggested the “Armor of God” coin that detailed the armor or protective covering we must wear when fighting spiritual battles.  We adopted this coin to remind all who participate in our programs of the importance of putting on the full armor of God each day.

Cuba: Friend or Foe? (part 1)

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:43-45

Family Teams for Life: Military Edition

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

It was a cold, rainy day in West Germany in 1984 when I attended the mandatory NEO (noncombatant evacuation operation) briefing at Rhein-Main Air Base.  A non-combatant is a spouse or family member who may be in danger in the event of a natural disaster or military emergency.  East and West Germany were divided; and living in Frankfurt placed us near the Fulda Gap, an important strategic location during the Cold War.  Strategists on both sides of the Iron Curtain understood the Fulda Gap’s importance, and assigned forces to defend and attack it.

2 Plus 1 = ONE

Written by Mike and Lisa Conn

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

(Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
