Addiction and Your Loved One: The Toll it Takes

Written by Barbara B.

One Sunday, as my husband and I were leaving church, we drove by a well-dressed couple walking down the sidewalk to their car.  Though I tried not to stare, something about them caught my eye as we drove by slowly.   After we passed them, I turned to my husband and said, “I believe that man is an alcoholic.”   He quickly looked in the rearview mirror at the man and then asked, “How in the world can you tell?”  I said, “Because I looked at his wife.”  I saw it on her face.  I saw it in her eyes.  I’ve seen that same look many times on the faces of friends, family, and strangers.  I know the look all too well.  I have had that same look many times in the past.  It is a look of desperation... often a look of hopelessness.   Many months after that Sunday, I met that lady and learned my assumption was right.   Addiction had taken a big toll on her.

Beating Bitterness

Written by Victor Parachin

Recently a convicted felon wrote advice an columnist lamenting he was “on a one-way trip down a road that leads nowhere.” The man said he felt hopeless about his future behind bars and signed his name “Inmate on a Dead End.” A few weeks later another reader of the column wrote to say: “I want ‘Inmate’ to know that one is never beyond hope. Prison may be the best thing that ever happened to him - it was for my husband.” She signed off as “Proud Wife in New Jersey.”

In 2013, HE-man Ministries founder Todd Carmichael felt like it was time to leave his restaurant career and pursue international and domestic missions, ultimately leading to the creation of HE-man Ministries.

How to be a Better Friend

Written by Victor M. Parachin

Just before the Christmas holidays, Lesley Dormen’s phone rang. The voice at the other end was so frail and frightened she had a hard time recognizing that it was Toni, her former college roommate. Though they had been close in school, they didn’t speak often nor did they see each other much as both lived in different cities. “What’s wrong?” asked Lesley. “I have cancer,” Toni replied. She was anxious because it was a recurrence of the breast cancer she’d been treated for 10 years earlier and had now spread to her stomach and ribs. Unmarried and living alone, Toni had recently experienced her first three rounds of chemotherapy. Extremely weary and discouraged, she phoned her college friend who listened compassionately. When the conversation was over, Lesley immediately called an airline and made a reservation. Next she phoned her husband at work to let him know that they would have to cancel all their weekend plans. Finally, she called Toni back saying “I am coming over this very weekend.”

When Jesus says, "I Love You"

Written by Greg Morse

Often, those who have injured us the most have been love’s greatest spokesmen.

The unfaithful husband sang, “My bride, my jewel, I love you!” — only to kiss

her cheek and depart to his mistress’s bed. A seemingly faithful friend swore, “Brother, I love you!” — only to leave the dagger in your back after his embrace. The co-dependent mother muttered, “It’s only because I love you my child!”

as she devoured him like a black widow.

Michael Coleman had a vision in which chronically unemployed men and women could learn to find and sustain employment without judgement. In January of 2012, he brought this vision to life.

Michael is now the Executive Director of Hope Inspired Ministries, a ministry that takes the jobless, the undereducated and the unequipped and provides them with the tools they need to become self-sufficient citizens with self worth and dignity. His dream is that “anyone who desires to go to work, provide for his or her family, break the destructive cycle of dependency, and become a productive citizen in the community will have the means to do so.”

The need for strong marriages and families will never go away. The legacy left by service men and women will affect their children and future generations for years to come. Lisa and Mike Conn, founders of Family Teams for Life, have been called to offer timeless instruction to those serving the United States to create and maintain strong families--for life.

6 Deady Enemies of Marriage

Written by Tim Challies

Marriage is under attack. Marriage has always been under attack. The world, the flesh and the devil are all adamantly opposed to marriage, and especially to marriages that are distinctly Christian. Marriage, after all, is given by God to strengthen his people and to glorify himself; little wonder, then, that it is constantly a great battleground.

Becoming the Prepared Bride of Christ

Written by Mary Sanders

In my line of work, I spend a great amount of time preparing brides for their upcoming wedding day.  It is in fact, the main purpose of my job, to be sure everything is planned to perfection, to make sure each bride has everything she needs to be ready for her wedding day. Over the last year, the Lord really started speaking to me about that very thing… “preparing the bride”…and what that really means beyond a wedding day. What does it mean for us as believers to be the prepared Bride of Christ, ready for His return?  What can we, Jesus’ Bride, do to be ready for that glorious day?
