On Cancer and Marriage…

Written by Mike & Lisa Conn

Last month, Doyle Powell expressed thankfulness to his First Baptist Sunday school class for the many calls, cards, casseroles, and prayers.  He couldn’t count the number of people who had contacted them since Lisa, his bride of 31 years, was diagnosed with endometrial cancer three days prior.  They were so thankful their friends were lifting them up daily—asking our heavenly Father for complete healing of Lisa’s body.  In fact, Doyle and Lisa were clinging to this lifeline of prayer.

Celebrating God's Word

Written by Bob Crittendon

Over 400 years ago, a group of theologians gathered at the request of King James I of England to craft an English translation of the Bible that would be available on a widespread basis. The King James Version has become one of the most influential books of all time, containing the truth of the Scriptures, and also certain phrases which have become part of the common English language. This year, we celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the culmination of that 7-year process to translate the Scriptures, resulting in what we know as the King James Bible, in 1611.

Comparing Yourself to Others

Written by Brenda Payne

Where do you feel insecure? How do you derive confidence? What do you use to measure yourself? Where do you find your value? Do you compare yourself to your mom, sister, co-worker or best friend? If so, how do you compare? As women, we tend to measure ourselves against each other. We examine and take note of our similarities and differences on a daily basis and in a myriad of areas. Think about a few areas where women tend to compare themselves to others.

Have You Crossed the River?

Written by Kim Hendrix

The Jordan River was at flood stage when the water suddenly parted, allowing the Israelites to cross over into the Promised Land to “take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.” (Joshua 1:11)  Imagine standing on the brink of a swollen river—dangerous and ominous—knowing that’s all that stands between you and the Promised Land (all that stands between you and the very life God wants you to have). Would you cross it?  Would you know how?

Pastor's Perspective: 33 Years

Written by Vaughn Stafford

I had a friend challenge me the other day to consider doing “multiplication ministry” rather than “addition ministry.”  I will confess, between you and me, that I want the world to know Jesus and pray everyday that God will give me the opportunity to share His love with someone in a transformational way.  That zeal is wonderful, but I sometimes feel frustrated that I can’t be in more than one place at a time.  There are so many people, so many hurts and so many opportunities that no one person can touch everyone, at least not directly (unless you are Jesus)!

Shine! Are You a Runner?

Written by Kim Hendrix

Just two months ago, thousands of people gathered in Montgomery to run a half marathon. I did not run in that event, but I guarantee you many people think I did. In fact, I expect complete strangers to congratulate me on my performance. It seems my running reputation far exceeds my ability thanks to a fellow church member who’s an avid runner and whose name just happens to be Ken Hendrick.
